A bold blue cocktail made with vodka, pineapple juice, lime, and jalapeño syrup. Sweet, spicy, and way better than it has any right to be.
In 2015, a vodka brand asked me to create a cocktail and, in a moment of what I can only describe as full creative freedom and zero adult supervision (you know, an adultier adult), I named it “Blue Balls Cocktail.”
Was it subtle? No.
Was it memorable? Unfortunately, yes.
Was it a good cocktail? …we’re revisiting that, and the answer is yes.
The photos? Still solid. (kind of, but we’ll get around to fixing that)
The concept? Honestly a little ahead of its time.
The execution? Let’s just say we’ve grown.
So here we are, taking this spicy, citrusy, electric-blue drink and turning it into something that not only looks good in a glass, but actually deserves to be there.

What Blue Balls Cocktail Tastes Like
This isn’t just a pretty drink – it’s an entire situation:
- Bright and tropical from pineapple
- Sweet citrus from blue curaçao
- Fresh, sharp acidity from lime
- A slow, warm heat from jalapeño
It’s the kind of cocktail that hits sweet first, then citrus, then a little spicy kick at the end – aka the flavor version of “okay…yeah, I like this.”
Why This Works
- Pineapple + lime bring brightness and keep it from going syrupy
- Blue curaçao adds orange flavor, not just Smurf energy
- Jalapeño syrup cuts through the sweetness instead of getting lost in it
The result? A cocktail that’s bold, a little unexpected, and actually balanced.
Garnish Ideas
Let’s move away from the coating rims in sugar era, shall we?
Try:
- Half sugar or salt rim
- Lime or grapefruit wheel
- Pickled jalapeño slice
- Pineapple wedge + pickled jalapeno slice
Clean, simple, still eye-catching – just… less spring break energy.
How Spicy Is It?
Totally customizable.
- Mild: ½ oz jalapeño syrup
- Medium: ¾ oz syrup
- Spicy: Add a lightly muddled jalapeño slice to the shaker
Pro tip: It’s easier to add heat than take it away; start low and build.
Variations
Less Sweet Version
- Reduce blue curaçao to ¾ oz
- Add a dash of bitters to shaker
Frozen Blue Balls Cocktail (you’re welcome)
- Blend all ingredients with ice
- Serve as a spicy tropical slushie
- Proceed with caution
Extra Citrus Kick
- Add a splash of fresh orange juice for more depth
Jalapeño Simple Syrup (Quick How-To)
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1–2 jalapeños, sliced
Simmer until sugar dissolves, steep 15–20 minutes, strain, cool. Pour into air tight container and keep refrigerated, good for 4 weeks.
Is this the most mature cocktail name on the internet? No. Is it one you’ll remember? Absolutely. And, it tastes as good as it looks, just like it did back in 2015.
