Shredded Chicken Sliders with Fried Green Tomatoes and Brown Sugar BBQ Sauce

Sharing is caring!

Want a chicken recipe that combines the best of both Southern food worlds?

I have one for you.

IMGP5512 copy

It’s chicken sliders topped with fried green tomatoes and a sweet/smokey homemade barbecue sauce on buttered yeast rolls.

They are evil….because they might just be a poster child for gluttony. That is gluttonous in a good way.

Using fried green tomatoes literally is a game changer when it comes to these It gives these sliders a whole new element of taste and texture that I just love. The chicken, the crispiness of the fried tomato, the sauce, OMG – it’s such a delicious thing.

I had to add more hot sauce to mine, by the way.

Because when a sauce/dip/condiment is good, I can’t get enough of it.

Trust me on the yeast rolls – with these I wholeheartedly believe no other bread will do.

Here’s your printable!

Ingredients
  1. 1 batch Barbecue Sauce, recipe below
  2. 3 cups chicken, cooked (or grilled - better option), and shredded
  3. 3 cups canola oil
  4. 2-3 green tomatoes, sliced
  5. 1 cup corn meal
  6. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  7. 1 tbsp sea salt
  8. 1 tbsp coarse black pepper
  9. 2 eggs, beaten
  10. 6 slider buns (I used yeast rolls; they made these so good)
  11. 1 stick salted butter, melted
Barbecue Sauce
  1. 1 tbsp olive oil
  2. 1/4 white onion, diced teeny tiny
  3. 1 cup brown sugar
  4. 1 can tomato paste
  5. 3/4 cup ketchup
  6. 1/2 cup white vinegar
  7. 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  8. 1/4 cup beef broth
  9. 1 tbsp hot sauce
  10. 1 1/2 tbsp seasoned salt
  11. 1 tbsp garlic powder
  12. 1 tsp coarse black pepper
Instructions
  1. Over medium heat, saute the onion until translucent. Combine everything else in a medium size sauce pan.
  2. Turn heat to medium high and whisk until incorporated; bring to a boil. Turn heat down to low, cover and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Store in a tight container and set aside. If not using now, store in fridge.
  4. Preheat oven to 425°.
  5. After making the sauce (if you choose to use bottled sauce that will work just fine), get prepared to make the tomatoes.
  6. Mix the corn meal, flour, salt and pepper in a bowl, and heat canola oil over medium high heat.
  7. Dip tomato slices in egg, then dip in flour mixture until coated. Fry until golden brown and drain on a paper towel lined plate.
  8. Spread butter on bun halves and put them in the oven for about 2-5 minutes, until lightly browned.
  9. To make sliders, stack chicken on bottom followed by fried green tomato, then barbecue sauce. If you like this as much as I do, you'll want at least two tomato slices.
