This isn’t the best crab cake recipe I’ve ever followed, it’s the best recipe I’ve ever followed!

I’ve used this for a couple years now and every time I make it the crowd goes wild. My father in law actually got mad at me one time for “wasting” the leftover remoulade (after all crab cakes were consumed)! He wanted to take it home!

There are some foods I like to fancy up, but a fried bologna sandwich should just be simple, easy and quick. What I remember was just…fry some bologna, spread the bread with mayo and mustard, slap on the bologna and enjoy. Lettuce makes it fancy, but I suppose I’d slap that on there too. I’ll make the first one basic and simple, and maybe I’ll graduate to fancy.

“Combine chicken with soy sauce through pineapple juice”??? Makes no sense. When and where is the Teriyaki marinade incorporated??? After the pineapple is carmelized and the chicken is grilled are the 2 mixed together??? Isn’t using the reserved marinade, especially that’s been in contact with raw chicken, a health hazard???

    • Reply
      Shea

Hi Jeffrey! If you look at the instructions, you combine the chicken through pineapple juice, the Teriyaki marinade included. The reserved marinade is combined with butter and pineapple, brought to a boil and simmered which kills any bacteria. Again, this step is in the instructions.

      Hope this helps.

Plus I would be super motivated to learn new recipes, and learn doughs and breads! My mother has a similar mixer in her home, and I am in love with it; I’ve always wanted one of my own, but can’t afford it. I would use this mixer for a lifetime, thanks for the opportunity!

I made this dressing tonight and it is wonderful! You are right, it was so easy to make. I couldn’t find anchovy paste so I made my own from canned anchovies. I put all of the ingredients in my food processor and it was a snap! I’m making a large salad for an event and I doubled the recipe so I would have leftover dressing for the week. Thanks so much!

It’s brilliant, and I can’t wait to try it! (Oh, and now I need to get that folding strainer, and that flexible spatula, and the potato masher that makes so much more sense than any of the ones I have! LOVE IT!) 🙂

Shea, thank you for sharing your personal story with this recipe, I am divorced too, and although I still have two (grown) kids at home, they are quite reclusive and extremely picky eaters. I imagine what it will be like when they are gone. I know that my cooking creativity bothered my ex at times … also, I didn’t understand or believe he had special dietary needs and that’s my bad. Looking back, I wish I had paid more attention and made an attempt to cook to help his health, but I didn’t and I can’t go back and change it. I cook for myself a lot now and I love the freedom of it because I’m not constrained by anyone else’s food constraints or pickiness. Also: I think of it as not just cooking for myself, but also cooking for everyone else that might be cooking for one or two and wanting something good to eat (because I blog it!) … oh and I wanted to tell you too: I very rarely eat fried foods, but your pineapple sounds fabulous!

I’m impressed. Not because you created something delicious, but because you’ve fooled me into thinking I’m eating as I always have — flavor first, healthy last. It doesn’t hurt that you’ve used Progresso Soup as a main flavor component. (It’s one of the few prepared soups I’ll eat.) Thanks, Shea. I’ll be bookmarking this for sure.

You and I will have to part ways when it comes to P.F. Chang’s. Chang’s is to Asian food what Olive Garden is to Italian. Perhaps you’d be willing to come visit us in Houston and allow me to take you to Chinatown. — Now that I’ve trashed a couple of national chains, I think it’s fair to say that if (Chang’s) cooking had as much breadth and depth as yours, I’d feel differently. This recipe is an outstanding example. Keep on cooking, girlfriend. And I’m serious about the Chinatown tour. 😉

Here’s the deal, Shea — I’ve never seen this Cabot cheese at my grocer, but I’ll ask for it. This dip looks phenomenal. And you know what? Fuck the traditional Thanksgiving fare. If it were that good, I’d be eating it all the time! Turkey is gross.

Hold your horses, Shea! Mustard and bologna are the shit. Apple pie and cheddar are the bomb. Burritos and rice are where it’s at. And everyone knows that grapefruit juice goes better with toothpaste than orange juice!

Coffee and meat are also a great marriage. I’ve even used coffee in my cowboy beans. (After all, that’s what they did back in the day.) The burger looks fantastic, but I still can’t figure out how the people in your home state of Alabama will eat it … considering most of them lose their teeth by age 16.

The sandwich is restaurant-worthy.. NICE restaurant worthy (not some greasy spoon). I have mixed feelings on your egg preparation though. I’m a shitty egg cooker, because I lose my cool and break the yolk. (This is why my scrambled eggs are the best in the Western Hemisphere.) Needless to say, this steam thing could earn me some points. But… My bride and her mom (and my dad) can cook the perfect fried egg over the highest of heat. And that includes the over easy version that gets a quick flip before ending up on the plate.

So is your husband wrong? I wouldn’t say so. I’d just say that you and I need to learn how to fry an egg without steaming the damn thing.

Looks like you’ve done an interesting and delicious job here. — As for the store thing, I feel your pain. I went two days ago and was so excited about the Maytag Blue and Ellio’s pizza, that I ended up leaving the Maytag at the checkout. When I arrived back at the Jimmy Rockford, I had a 12 pack of peach soda, a big-ass bag of Hatch peppers and a six-pack of Sierra Nevada’s latest beer. Go figure.

I can honestly say that I’ve never had poutine, and I think our northern friends like that bullshit because they don’t know any better. (Sort of like me liking Pittsburg Hot Links.) OK. I should ease up on the throttle and give it a shot before I get all judgmental. After all, I like Rush and they’re from Canada. — But I like ZZ Top and Black Joe Lewis & the Honey Bears even more, and they’re from my next of the woods. Your Steak and Cheese Fries are ZZ Top. Whereas poutine (which sounds like a vulgar word) is hardly Bryan Adams or Leonard Cohen. (Look them up.)

He looked at me as if I’d just stepped off Mars. “Why???” he said.

“I’m going to have a fried baloney sandwich for lunch,” I said with a smile. The eyeroll I got could have won an Oscar. And yes, I sang the baloney song while I prepared my sandwich. I didn’t have any onion rings or fancy mayo either but I will next time. 🙂

There is no shame whatsoever in eating — or finishing off — this beautiful casserole. (Cabot cheese is outstanding!) But ‘Talladega NIghts?’ Really, Shea? And you watched it in bed, no less?

Adam, I would watch Talladega Nights 100 more times, and that’s saying a lot because I don’t like to watch movies multiple times. What’s wrong with that movie? And, yes, we had a lazy day – literally stayed in our PJ’s, watched movies and ate this beautiful food.

Love kumquats. You can just pop them right into your mouth, which is the best part. If you’re a drinker, this would make a great base flavor for a margarita!

Don’t be a fraidy cat. Just pop that morsel in your mouth and go to town. ~ Those are the ‘Nagami’ Kumquats, although a couple of them look like the ‘Meiwa’ variety. How do I know this? Because I grow those plants on my front porch! Divine eating. And an outstanding jam! (Because I also grow hot peppers!) Good job, Shea. As always. 🙂

North or South no matter. The only thing that matters is that you didn’t use a bunch of fillers, bell peppers the worst of the offenders. Thank you!

Your recipe sounds fantastic, I just wish crab meat wasn’t so ridiculously expensive. Harumph.

The Cabot Cooperative is some of the best cheese available nationwide. We are huge fans. You can keep your jalapenos though. I prefer the flavor of serranos and the heat of pequins.
