How to Open a Pomegranate

How to Open a Pomegranate

As promised in my Pomegranate Hummus post, here’s my video tutorial for how to open a pomegranate.

Or cut a pomegranate, whichever way you like to say it.

The end goal is to get the arils (seeds) out so you can do things like this –

Once you learn how to open a pomegranate, you’ll  wanna make AALLLLLL the pomegranate recipes…

A few years ago, I watched someone open one on a local news cooking segment and I was both intrigued and relieved.

Intrigued because it’s such an interesting way to cut a fruit (water bath? seriously?), and also relieved because I had been annihilating my kitchen with every single pomegranate I opened.

It’s actually pretty easy. You basically cut and pop the top off, cut the pomegranate in sections. Then you quickly put it in a large bowl of water so you can remove the pomegranate arils sans a big mess going all over your cutting board and counter.

Another, even less messier, way is to put the pomegranate in the way before you pull out the sections.

This avoids the mess, because pomegranate juice stains.

The water bath also allows you to remove the little white pieces of pulp that tend to stick to the arils. The messiness stays in the water bath.

Oh, and another problem it prevents – runaway arils!

Cheers!
